Houses in Annerley face significant termite (white ant) threats. On average, Conquer Termites would conduct a chemical treatment to a home in Annerley once a month. It is hard to put an exact figure on the number of homes that are being attacked and damage by termites in Annerley, but our records show it would be higher than most suburbs in Brisbane.

Reasons why the termite threat is high in Annerley
  • The majority of the housing stock is on average over 60 years old. This means any original chemical treatment has expired or due to past (many) renovations, the structure has been compromised allowing concealed entry for the termites.
  • Normally the houses in Annerley have suspended wooden floors on concrete stumps with a laundry at the rear that is on the ground. This is usually the entry point for termites.
  • As Annerley is a more establish area, so are the gardens. This means there will be old tree stumps that could be harbouring a termite nest in your garden or your neighbours. Old timber retaining walls are as much of a threat as tree stumps. Also, Annerley has many large trees (usually blocking your city views!) and moist gullies – ideal environment for termites.
  • High percentage of park-lands that have a large number of native eucalyptus trees that normally harbour termite nests. This is especially so being so close to the green areas around Ekibin Park and the Brisbane river.
Interesting information about Annerely.

It was named after a town in England.

Much of the suburb is elevated, lying on a ridge that gives views of the city. For many years it was a somewhat rundown suburb, particularly close to main roads, but with gentrification and the rise in the cost of housing, many of the original ‘Queenslanders’ have been restored to their former glory.

The suburb is of medium population density with many apartment blocks, guest houses and fast-food outlets. The major road in the suburb is Ipswich Road, one of Brisbane’s main southerly traffic arteries. Until 13 April 1969 the suburb was served by electric trams, which ran along Ipswich Road.

In 2006, Annerley had 36.7% of residents born overseas and 26.5% of residents speaking a language other than English. The most common languages other than English spoken at home were: Greek 2.0%, Arabic 1.7%, Vietnamese 1.6%, Cantonese 0.9% and Italian 0.9%.
