If you have a carpet with a high content of wool (50%+), then there is a good chance you will experience an infestation of carpet beetles. The risk is heightened when the carpet beetle larvae aren’t disturbed by regular vacuuming.
You might see small moths flying around inside the room(s) with the woollen carpet. They’ll land and insert their eggs deep in the carpet that will hatch and become hairy larvae. It’s these larvae that eat the base of the carpet fibre.
After a while, you’ll start to see holes appearing. Most of the time these aren’t noticed as the larvae favour the dark secure areas under heavy furniture.
To prevent a carpet beetle infestation, vacuum and move the furniture. If you have an infestation, get the carpet cleaned (hot water extraction with a pre-vacuum by a powerhead vacuum cleaner) and arrange a spray treatment by a licensed applicator.
