Buzzzzzzz… buzzzzzz….buzzzzzz… ouch!
Why do mosquitoes bite me?
It’s mosquito time again. Just as we are preparing ourselves for the hot weather, surf n sunshine, BBQs in the back yard and social gatherings … out come the mossies. Those pesky, blood-sucking, buzzing & flying insects that really get on our nerves.
What are mosquitoes attracted to?
Mosquitoes are attracted to the carbon dioxide humans, and other animals emit. They also use their receptors and vision to pick up on other cues like body heat, perspiration, and skin odour to find a potential host.
Mosquitoes are a big problem. Apart from that very unsettling buzzing noise you hear in your bedroom at night and the resulting itchy bites, mosquitoes can lead to more severe health problems.
Mosquitoes are responsible for more estimated deaths than any other animal globally because of the rate they spread diseases. And each year, there is a period of time when mosquitoes can become a real plague in Australia given the right conditions.
Common Queensland mosquito-borne diseases
• Barmah Forest virus. • Dengue fever. • Ross River virus.

Why are there mosquitoes around my home?
Since we’ve had such a wet spring the numbers of mosquitoes already out and about have skyrocketed. It may surprise you that mossies don’t fly far, so if you are experiencing an increase, it might be time to check your backyard for their breeding grounds.
Breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
- Ponds, fountains & bird baths
- Plant pots & bromeliads
- Blocked gutters & drains
- Puddles
- Swimming pools with low chlorine levels
- Rainwater tanks with inadequate mosquito screening
Smell matters for Mosquitoes!
Another thing to remember is that mosquitoes use their sense of smell to determine a good source of food; for them, this is your blood, so if you can use a product containing DEET on your body, you will no longer smell delicious to mosquitoes.
Chemical treatment for Mosquitoes
There are two other components to successfully eliminating mosquitoes from your home. Still, these are better left for the professional - applying a product to breeding sites that prevents mosquito larvae from developing & applying a product to surfaces that prevent adults from breeding.
