What is integrated pest management and why should we be interested in it?
In basic terms it means that more is required than just applying a chemical treatment to a house, whether it be for cockroaches, ants, termites or any other pest.
When a house has termites in it, it is obviously vulnerable due to one reason or another, and therefore steps should be taken to address and remove the risk factors.
Below are a few of the possible vulnerabilities when dealing with termites:
Drainage issues - termites need moisture, so any excess can be exploited by them
Internal moisture issues - Again, just as we need to avoid excessive moisture outside, we must pay attention to any leaks inside our homes.
Construction vulnerabilities
A lapse in an effective termite management system - Homes are protected only as long as termite management systems are maintained.
As you can see in the picture below, it is important that the soil is removed from contact with the timber frame. Next, an effective retaining wall is installed and then a chemical treatment is carried out. This is a good example of integrated pest management - addressing the issue from multiple angles.

In most cases applying a chemical treatment is only one step in protecting your home. Often, issues such as those listed above are vital. These issues are always outlined in your termite inspection report, and really need to be addressed quickly to allow your chemical treatment plan to keep protecting your home in years to come.
