Kirsten Abbott knows all about the weird and wonderful world of ants.

“Ants have fascinating ways of communicating and are so connected to each other that scientists think of ant colonies as superorganisms, because they operate as a unified entity.

Kirsti is an ant ecologist at the University of New England.

Her work has taken her to islands in the Pacific, including Christmas Island, where swarms of yellow crazy ants were creating super colonies and taking over the island.

One of Kirsti’s enthusiasms is for science communication, and she coordinates a citizen science project called School of Ants.”
