Houses in The Gap face significant threat from termites. In fact, we have looked at our statistics and found that The Gap is among the top 5 suburbs we are called out to do Termite Inspections.
The Gap is a popular suburb and is surrounded on 3 sides by bushland, forest and the Enoggera Resevoir; and it is certainly understandable why so many are choosing to take up residence there. It is very attractive to potential homebuyers and established residence, as a suburb less than 10kms South West of Central Brisbane. Added to that convenience is also its natural appeal. The Gap is built into the valley between Mount Coot-tha and Enoggera Hill, both part of the Taylor range.
It is where the main entry to the Brisbane Forest Park is located.
Why The Gap is at high risk of termite invasion
Conquer Termites is called out to The Gap’s leafy, hilly streets very often. There is a lot of bush land and a lot of fantastic parks in the area running along creeks and reservoirs , so an abundance of trees gives the suburb a wonderful feel. It therefore, also provides a very inviting home to termites. Coptotermes and Schedorhinotemes (Brisbane’s most prolific termites) are presented with a veritable feast of bush land and Gum Trees (Eucalyptus trees are their favourite place to start a colony and build their nests). And because 3 of its sides feature high bushland and forest, termite alates (the breeding termites who fly away from nests to start colonies) are attracted to the area.
About 60-70% of The Gap houses are 50 years old, which means that most chemical treatments installed when the home was built have well and truly worn off; leaving properties susceptible to infestation. There are also a lot of newer areas, built in the mid 1990’s – brick veneer homes. In the same vein, many homes in the area have undergone extensive renovations, and most don’t realise that when they do this they MUST get their chemical and physical barriers updated. Added to this, the devastating storms of 2008 that caused major damage to the area and could well have undermined previous chemical and physical barriers to many properties, and it’s a good idea to contact a professional pest control team. Conquer Termites offers it’s customers a free half hour assessment, to give you the peace of mind that comes with professional advice.
Brick Veneer homes combined with bushland and gum trees make The Gap a prime area for Termite infestation.
Many of The Gap’s homes are brick veneer, built in the 1970s and 1990s. Statistically, brick veneer homes have proven to be particularly vulnerable to termite infestation, as the termites can crawl behind the veneer and remain undetected for a long time. Did you know that termites can actually be eating your house, undetected for up to 10 years? This alone seems a good reason to have regular inspections if there ever was one.
